Paul Oakenfold - Cafe Del Mar [Perfecto Fluoro]

Paul Oakenfold is on a Trance Mission to re-interpret some of his most treasured classic trance records starting with the legendary ‘Café Del Mar’…

For many trance fans ‘Café Del Mar’ may well be their greatest track the genre has ever seen, it was massive back in the late 90’s and a track that has inspired many of today’s top artists to produce the music they do today. It is one of Paul Oakenfold’s favourite trance records of all time and its why he’s picked it for a very special compilation he has in the pipeline called ‘Trance Mission’. It will be a collection of his favourite tunes; all remixed by Paul and a select number of his most trusted allies. This is hopefully the first full single of a fair few to come and on remix duties he has Angry Man, Peetu S and Activa. Just what do you do to a track like Café Del Mar to make it better, lets find out.

When I say better, with a classic track such as this one that can be very hard. What you can do though is put your own little twist on and it and as the original production is well over 10 years old it’s about due a little make over. One thing you will be please to note about all the remixes here is the iconic melody has remained relatively unchanged and still gets the hairs standing up on end. If it isn’t broken you don’t need to fix it, but there is no harm in giving the paintwork fresh coat.

That’s what Paul’s done with his remake here dropping what I would say is his old signature sound on the track with a ripping bass line that pounds from start to finish. It’s got a little hint of 99 about it but with a modern day touch up on the production. The only drawback with his mix I would have chopped off is a little vocal snippet shouting out the track title after the main break. With a melody as iconic as ‘Café Del Mar’ it needs no description.

The remixes is back up this fresh remake of an all time great are superb. Angry Man’s mix has a little bit of acid flavour for those who like that sound in their trance. Peetu S’s remix goes a little darken than the others with some killer bass lines that lead into an epic main melody drop. Activa, who has recently joined the Perfecto family, puts a real psy edge on his mix. His mix is one which is least varied from the original composition is the pick of the bunch for me.

Conclusion:
This is a tune worthy of gracing the cover of a Perfecto Fluoro sleeve and the new remakes do no injustice to the legendary original. Paul Oakenfold’s first selection of one of his most treasure trance tunes of all time is a very fine one, as is his choice of remixers to back it up.
