© Tom SzirtesYEN Recordings may well be a very new label but Tom Szirtes is anything but a new artist. Perfect fit then for a new artist album with 'Barely Breathing' coming this September taking you on an experimental musical journey...

Newly launched YEN Recordings initiates the listener into their own inviting youthful space; one that inhabits both musical expression and private relaxation.

Displaying a constant willingness to step outside of genre-purist boundaries It's abundantly clear that it was only a matter of time before the man behind Shur-i-kan (Tom’s successful house moniker) and Yen Recordings found each other; making the emotional context of “Calling You” almost unbearably intimate and beautiful.

Embarking as pacesetters, tacking the very currency of a refined listening experience head on with clear confidence rather than admiring it with a few well-placed quotes.

YEN will be developing a signature sound far away from two-dimensional synths, that sees more refined, melancholy, and often-lighter output. The label will strive to project an omnidirectional musical approach from the collective of artists and producers it is set to assemble.

Rife with dichotomy “Barely Breathing” is an album of strong melodies and delicate electronic drums that works far beyond the genres often-narrow stylistic range. Tom’s skillful production techniques across the 8 tracks and use of guest vocals on “Calling You” create welcoming structures that allow the whole albums lighter touches to flourish.

Any hint of esoteric is quickly hushed with one of the albums standout cuts “Solstice” humming with quintessential relaxation and reflection. Unsurprising really, coming from a classical trained musician that has been exploring his craft way beyond just the musical platform, one of audio, digital art and moving image. All-powerful and immersive experiences that continue to transcend into his recorded music.

I decided to work with Yen because they allowed me the freedom to create music outside of the boundaries of dance music, that I have been associated with for the last decade. Sean and the team's commitment to quality gave me confidence to associate with this new exciting label.Tom Szirtes

The seasoned producer has made good on that pledge, quickly demonstrating the ability to gravitate from the warm and gentle opening strings of the albums namesake intro, to a beautifully placed series of well-chosen instrumental flourishes. Arguably his best songwriting has emerged when he’s avoided the cursory or redundant beats and explored more ambient, harmony loaded terrain.

Subtle, soulful tones still clutching the songwriting process give each track way too much emotion to ignore; and importantly gives the label an early and memorable moment of levity – absorbing all of the positive qualities from their fellow contemporaries; a sure hint that Yen is set to provide much more than just a passive listening experience.

The inaugural full-length release has laid down the language and intentions; crafted by a sound anchored with hugging synths, piano keys, and a true sense of narrative build…accumulating in the rising, synthetic “Constitution Hill”, a clear standout, encompassing true patience and escapism.

If Tom’s in exploratory mode, he’s sure found what he’s looking for.
