Post subject: Decribe your local "Scene" |
|
|
Just curious to see what the electronic scene is like in different parts of the world.
Ottawa apparently had a really amazing "Rave Scene" from the early 90's, and many say its prime was 97. I've only been here since 2000, and have noticed that "the scene" and parties have changed a lot.
For one, there aren't as many people at most parties. Its really hard to get people out. It really doesn't help that there are now bylaws which make it hard to throw parties - there are heavy liscencing fees involved every time a venue is booked, plus they need to hire professional security.
Most parties are trance parties. They tend to have the bigger, but younger crowds.
Most successfull club nights are top 40's. Sucessfull electronic music clubnights are almost all house... mainly disco house. Most other clubs that get opened, get shut down... its hard to secure adn afford a good location, as well as to get enough people out to generate enough revenue.
There's also a pretty good dnb / jungle scene here, as well as a goa scene. There's a lot of everything, really. But there isn't nearly as much unity, as many people pour their whole self into one style, or one genre. And of those, many are "too cool" for other styles.
IE If someone said they're a raver, you can assume they're into trance. Other than that, you have your punks, goths, junglists, goa heads, etc. There just aren't many people who fall in between categories.
I would say the main negative aspect of Ottawa's scene is that there is a lot of segregation, and that a lot of people think they're too cool or too old for some types of music / parties / clubs
And I'd say the main positive aspect, is that those who are making an effort to keep things alive, are doing a really good job. Its a fairly small city, and a fairly small community. But many people are promotors, dj's, mc's and producers.
There is a lot of talent, and a lot of potential for the Ottawa scene. But there are a lot of people who seem to have given up on it, but instead of letting go, they complain about the next generation coming into the scene, give them a hard time, and always talk about how things were so much better during "their time"

It's a bit crap around here. Locally anyway. Sheffield and Derby are a bit of a hike from where I am to get to crasher or progress. Choice of two towns for a local night out. The clubs are not really driven by music.
First towm there are two main nightclubs. One where they play club music in one room and 80's 90's pop in the other. Very commercial music wise. The second town there are a few clubs but again they always play chart top 40 and commercial club euro trance shite.

Thats too bad... I can picture what that would be like. Are there special laws on clubs in the area? Is there anyone working in either town to get a club open?
If not, I'm sure there must be some people who'd invest in getting a good club night running.

and the ones where 30+ people goes....they mainly play 80s and 90s pop-music here...

Not at all really, most new clubs that have opened recently seem to be like another installment of the clubland compilations

well speaking on melbourne's behalf i would have to say that the scene is split up and varied some what. Starting with the clubs, the majority are commercial clubs, R&B are in all the bigger clubs in the city. But the great thing about melbourne is that there is tiny clubs/pubs hidden in alleys and places you would never think possible
From the electronica scene house is probably the most popular, with the older crowd of 21-30, this is also popular to the homosexual community. Then there is also a large following of techno and breaks, which is getting bigger. I would say hard trance is by far the largest of (trance related genres) in melbourne.
Having 2-4 very successful clubs in melbourne, all pumping out Hard Trance, this usually attracts a younger age group 18-24 give or take a few years.
Uplifting has a little following, it doesn't get played in much clubs, only one or two at the moment, but it slowly taking off, i doubt it will ever get as popular as the hard trance scene.
We do get events and festivals that come to aus aswell, such as godskitchen, slinky, gatecrasher ect. The sad thing about these events is that the crowd is fairly young and about 90% are there because they want to be able to tell their friends that "they went to a rave" The other 10% are their because they are actually interested in the line up and international dj's, these people can be found right at the front
erm... i think thats about all, it just has to be said that in melbourne we have a lot of clubs and pubs, which play out all sorts of music, so if your interested in any genre im sure there will be a club to go to, even if the capacity is 50 ppl

The scene in NYC has gotten pathetically anemic thanks to the local government shutting down the biggest and best known clubs and its campaign of harrasment against clubbers. The few remaining "mega-clubs" that do exist, treat you like a criminal as soon as you walk through their doors. The sense of family that many of the former clubs' patrons felt was dissipated by the emergence of lounge parties at a gazillion little venues around the city. Everyone split up and the "scene" slowly but surely started to decline. For those die-hard clubbers who still prefer a club over a posh lounge, there are actually TOO MANY clubs left. While the remaining clubs might book top-notch talent, the herd of clubbers is so thin that many larger clubs remain half-empty on some weekends.
Maybe the new clubs slated to open this fall like Crobar and the one that's opening in Twilo's old space ("Spirit" from Ireland I think?) will kick things up a notch. NYC is in desperate need of something new.
