Just heard that Shirin Ebadi from Iran was awarded the prize for 2003. What do you think? Is she a worthy winner?

Or should some of the other nominees like George W. Bush, The Pope or Michael Jackson have won?

I've never heard of her.

I would have not thought it be right that Bush get a prize for peace as all he's been doing the past year or so is creating wars, if you looking at it one way.

not sure I'd give it to anyone to be honest Smile

George W Bush??? He was a nominee? I can see the Pope winning it, but not Michael Jackson or Dubya.

I'm glad the Pope didn't win. His fight against condoms is just silly. Catholic priests tell people in poor countries that condoms don't protect against HIV and AIDS, that the virus can get through the rubber.
Some also say that condoms are smeared in HIV and AIDS virus so they are guaranteed the disease if they use them.

This is just horrible as in several African countries 50% of the population is infected, and when they don't use condoms it will just spread even more. That's very sad. Sad

Never heard of the actual winner but I have to agree with the rest of you guys that Bush most definitely shouldn't get it! And I didn't know the pope was condoning anti-condom propaganda. Which, in a sad way, makes sense since some people believe that any form of birth control is similar to abortion in that it is murder. makes face How messed up is our world?
Does anyone have more info on the lady that won? I am curious.

i dont know anything about the woman that won the peace prize too..

http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1059480508708

one postive impression of that award to this particular person is that, it seems a recognition of ongoing activity and struggle, rather than an award purely based on recognition of past events, if the it helps that person to futher their cause and to give it more momentum, or even maybe just highlight the problem more widely so that it can gain a wider standing ands assistance, its nice to see people deserve recognition for past everts, but if the same can be done for an ongoing struggle, and help it maybe, thats nice too Smile

i was aware about the stance on condoms and contraception, but none of those really stupid people giving out bad advice, thats in effect, murder, condeming a person to death, just because of one piece of rubber, bah, giving someones a religious viewpoint about contraception, so they can decide for themselves is one thing, but to blatently lie and make a situation worse than it is, arghh, bunch of twats, and all this in gods name too, if and when they meet their god, i hope they'll have to answer to all those people they have killed

all this aside, surely the actions of the few, which the pope probably may know or not know about (probably), he should have been considered definatly, and may even win it in the future, a person that can bring out the good, and have some influence in this little world, who depite all aliments and physical discomfort, still contiues to good work, and who has devoted his life right upto deaths door, preaching to people all the virtues of leading a good life, even if it makes one person, reconsider killing someone, and to find solace in forgiveness, im sure hes own work is his own reward, but official recognition doesnt go amiss too Smile

Personally I do think the Pope was an amazing man whose really done a lot for the world. As for the condom thing that's really touchy. The church says there shouldn't be sex outside of marriage, so of course condoms are just encouraging people to do that. However, people do anyway which results in unwanted pregnecies and abortions, which again the church is against.
In this case, perhaps the lesser of two evils should be chosen, and that would be using condoms. But again, how can the church tell people to use condoms when it is against what God and the Bible says?
