Tough one this year BUT! I shall go with
this cdn guy who killed his girl (well kidnapped her) on her way home from school, the next day they found parts of her body scattered along a 2mile stretch. Not just for the killing he is fuckwit of the year but for then his lawyer telling his complaints of jail is a lonely place to the courts. I mean the psychopath killed an innocent 8 yr old and has to be placed in solitary confinement for his own protection and then claims jail sucks. I mean it is supposed to suck if you commit crimes.

five years of fear and loathing
An English assignment…joy. If this is anything like previous ones, it will be a boring Sunday in for me. Ah! But it isn’t like previous ones. No, this one is personal. I can speak my mind. And I get to read a book by Hunter S. Thompson, and watch his drug-addled character portrayed in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as research.
A movie like that really makes you want to experiment with drugs. Before these kinds of movies, you are only ever told the negatives about drugs, you never get to hear the dope-fiend’s story. And he does have a story to tell. But we don’t want to hear from him now. We’re here to hear MY story, so there’ll be no more talk of dope-fiends. My story is about Sheep and Nazi’s. Nature’s perfect couple. Nazi’s want to lead, and Sheep want to follow.
I’m reflecting over my past five years of schooling at Brisbane State High School, which Igor once dubbed ‘the place where gay people meet during the day’. Ho ho. That motto articulates part of my opinion about our school quite well, although one shouldn’t infer too much about me from it. Okay, okay, I am cynical and somewhat unsociable. But I haven’t got one of those typical teenage rebellion complexes, i.e. ‘I hate school, I hate my parents, I don’t want to conform to everything society imposes on me, etc’. No, I love my parents, despite their short-comings and all the things about them that annoy me. Like those two misfit’s in American Beauty, my folks could’ve caused me permanent psychological damage. Mid-life crises, materialistic lifestyles, blatant hypocrisy and emotional arguments. I know that when they do things or act in ways that I don’t like, it is usually for my own good, or out of a good intention. It is very important to identify intention: if I hadn’t learnt that I certainly would be one of those typical teenagers. But the lesson of the importance of intention wasn’t learnt at school, so I won’t delve into that.
First of all, I don’t hate school. There are a lot of things about it that I dislike, but there are also a few positives, naturally. But the title of this piece uses Dr Hunter S. Thompson’s idiom fear and loathing, so I will be focusing on the negatives…I am, after all, cynical.
After five years at this school, I can’t help but recognise all the things I don’t like about the majority of my peers. So often I ponder why they are so *beep*-faced, and such intolerable swine. Okay that was a bit harsh. But I really do think that sometimes. Maybe it’s just me. Subconsciously I probably know that it is just me. But to hell with the subconscious – right now I am conscious, so I shit on the cowardly nocturnal subconscious. It’s always in the background and only shows itself in glimpses, and although it determines so much about a person, it keeps itself a secret, like the recipe for Pepsi. Curse that reclusive puppeteer.
ANYWAY, Why do I despise my contemporaries so? They are superficial sheep. Obviously this doesn’t apply to all of them. Lets say about 60%.
Lots of them are James Dean-esque bad boys, except they do what is wrong not out of apathy, but to be cool. So that they may be perceived as the kind of person glamorized by the media/society/whatever. Though completely transparent, they get away with their charade, as they outwardly fit the cool profile. And who cares to look deeper if they do that. This same formula applies to other types. The recent explosion of African-American culture has created a swarm of groupie-scum that dress, talk and think like their idols. It is a shame then, that so many of these idols are ignorant, gold-digging criminals. All the rich white Aussie kids somehow identify with black Americans, who grew up in ghettos with guns, violence, drugs and a racist society against them. And it is worth mentioning that these African Americans who may be from the streets, now sing about how much money they have, what happens when you mess them or their crew, and how big the distasteful chrome wheels on their $200,000 cars are. Oh, of course; they also sing about how many hot bitches get onto their knees for them. Which is by no means an exaggeration – those hot bitches even make-up a sector of the 60% scum population of my peers.
Another reason I loathe many of my peers, is their stupidity. Evidence: ever hear about the girl who was surprised that she got burned when she ironed the shirt she was wearing (while she was wearing it). More Evidence: I said “how are you?”, she (not the same one but I wouldn’t be surprised) said “not much.” And that happened three times.
It is incredibly frustrating to try to maintain a conversation with someone too stupid to know what you are talking about, and too stupid to take offense when you tease them about it. Subtle innuendo doesn’t work. You need to use sledgehammer insults. Sometimes even this kind of blatant abuse is misinterpreted to be a compliment.
Moving along, the next target of my loathing has been the abstract concept of school spirit. Though I have tried and tried, I cannot understand school spirit or why people have (feel?) it.
Everyone Monday morning, Mr. Sutton takes it upon himself to tell us all how great our school is, and how proud we should be to attend it. Why exactly should I feel pride for the learning institution I attend? I go here out of necessity: if I didn’t go to BSHS, I would go to another school. The reasons I attend BSHS is because it is my local high school, and because my OP is helped by a (very surprisingly) smarter student population than some other schools. For all students, though, if we didn’t go here we would go somewhere else.
School spirit is also in direct conflict with many of the values our schools are teaching us. The biggest of those is equality. Studying To Kill A Mockingbird, was a way of teaching us that ignorance leads to prejudice (and also to indirectly show how discrimination is wrong). In history you learn about all the racist atrocities committed by people in the past, and any history teacher (particularly the single-mother feminist who taught me) will try and ensure that each student leaves that class knowing that everyone is equal and should be treated thusly. And also generally, the societal stigma is that racism and discrimination is wrong, and that all people are equal. Why then, are we being given weekly pep-talks, about how and why we are better then all the other high schools (and by implication their students), in Brisbane, sometimes even Queensland? Some would argue that this is a misinterpretation on my behalf, but “we are the best!” is pretty straight-forward.
Following Sutton’s address, is often one by sports coordinator, Mr. Mahoney. At the last assembly I attended, Mahoney quite coincidentally began his speech with “I guess what Mrs. Hambrecht is talking about is school spirit.”
“Hot damn!” I thought. Grab a pen and paper, cause here comes the propaganda I’ve been talking about.
In his characteristic deep-husk voice, Mahoney then launched into a shameful sermon of emotional blackmail, using school spirit as a means of manipulating students into participating in sport. For any of the students who bothered to care, it was no doubt a degrading scene. And they say we give the school a bad image.
School spirit doesn’t stop on Monday mornings. No, no. During the week you’ll likely get harassed and threatened, that if you don’t fix up your uniform you will be transferred. Then come Saturday, we are practicing micro-wars out on a sports field, united against people we are, in Sutton’s own words, better than. Sure that is the nature of sport, but in this context it adds up to more. We have the dynamic leader, with nasty henchmen in tow; we have the large public gatherings for pep-talks; we have a very strong sense of unity (nationalism?), and we have the momentous battles against our foes. Hmmm…could this be alluding to something?
Whoops! I just likened our principal to Hitler. I should probably stop before I incriminate myself somehow. I don’t want this to finish with me being the Nazi. Or the Sheep for that matter. I’d like to think I don’t fit anywhere on that spectrum, but that may be wishful thinking. And it is a spectrum. Let’s think prefects. They are part sheep, but the Nazi’s have elevated them. They are honorary Nazi’s, or Nazi’s in training.
I think it’d be cool to be a prefect, only because they get to organise the senior project. But I wouldn’t waste it by doing something stupid like fixing a clock, or buying a banner. No, I’d erect a nice big statue of a Nazi and a Sheep, somewhere that everyone can see. Like the statue of Liberty tells all the immigrants entering New York that they can expect justice, the statue of Blissful Dominance will illustrate to potential students what to expect if they come to Brisbane State High. And there would still be no vacancies.
sorry for the massive post...hehe 1600 words if ur wondering
