Post subject: Scary weather stories |
|
|
Well, the big storm season just ended here in Minnesota, and now people are going about the yearly routine of swapping storm stories with each other.
Actually, the worst weather experience I've ever had was when I lived in North Dakota about two years ago. I remember I was alone at home with my little sister, when all of a sudden it started to rain like crazy and the wind picked up to over 100 miles per hour... like an idiot, I stayed upstairs and peered out the kitchen window to try and get a good look at what was going on. I couldn't see out that window, so I moved about three feet over to the door and looked out of it. Almost immediately I heard a huge BANG and watched the window I had just been looking out of fly about four feet horizontally, hit the stove, and smash to bits. All I can say is it's a good thing I moved or I might not have both eyes today.
Minnesota's just as bad... tornadoes rip through here on such a regular basis it's almost old hat. Luckily we didn't get any actual funnels at my place, but we lost our glass patio table which flew into the air, hit the side of the deck and smashed and then flew over into the road. We've had a good number of scares. Oh, and did I mention three inches of water in the basement? My dad lost a crap load of vinyl and we lost a lot of books, too. Lucky for me, I was able to save my beloved PS2 and Gamecube before the water reached them.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else on the forums has some scary weather stories to share. They don't have to be wind-related. I'm sure everyone would love to hear about the time you got stuck in that blizzard or survived that hurricane.

With the UK beimg the UK we dont get many big storms over here and tornado's are few and far between. the worst wind one we had was back in 92 when gales of around 80-90 went on all night, knocking tress down, power lines and the like. Pretty scary, especially when your 9.

well...not actually scary....but some years ago when I was about 14-15 I rode my bike to a friend on a warm and sunny afternoon (about 6km from my place)...after I arrived it started raining heavily and a thunderstorm started....it didn't stop...but rather got worse when I finally had to go home....tried phoning my parents to come get me, but the phone was out of order because of the lightning.
So I went out and rode home...only wearing a t-shirt and shorts....the temperature had dropped from about 30 to 15 and it rained so heavily it was 2-3cm of water everywhere...I thought I would never get home since it was freezing cold and so heavy to bike in all the water...
...and when I finally arrived at home the whole frontyard was like a river (house lying in a slope) with 30cm of muddy water....and just as I got under roof a heavy hail shower started....must say I was very lucky to be home then
..afterwards we spent 2 days cleaning up the basement....getting rid of all the water...and throwing away destroyed things....

My family and I were out at our log cabin near the lake by our town and it hailed really hard - the hail was literally the size of golf balls. It broke one of the skylights we had in the roof - fortunately they were double paned. That was pretty scary.

Why didn't you just stay at your friend's house overnight? Your parents would have probably guessed where you were, even if the phones were out.

Beacuse his parents are a bit strange....and didn't want me to stay there "ruining" their Saturday-night
(and my parents didn't know exactly where I was....not the address anyway).
