What do you use as inspiration for your music? Is any particular artist, song, etc, or does the tune just pop into your head and you think "Hey that sounds good"?

i dunno about other genres, but i produce melodic trance... an that involves melodies (hence the name )
when i work on a tune, the most important part is the melody, the place where the tune gains his power...
there are a few very popular sequences that alot of producers are using for melodies, but as for the notes (the melody it self) this is something u have to came up with yourself (if u wanna be original and have your own style of course )
most times... a new melody pops into my head when i least expect it....and then i play it in my head a few times....then i'm like "hey this thing sounds wicked...." and then the first thing i do when i come back home is sitting in front of my computer working on it

Yeah, I'll be sitting there and suddenly it pops into my head and i think "Wow, I can't believe I didn't think of this before". Then I sit and the computer and I pull a complete blank. After ya lose a couple or three songs that way it gets a bit irritating.

just a little comment from me....allthough I'm no producer....
I come up with some nice melodies/riffs in my head pretty often....but when I try describing or getting them into a music-program etc. there's no chance I can reproduce it....think I'm tone-deaf or something

I'm the same way, Stream. Things come and go in my head, but this tone-deaf disorder (hehe) seems to stop me cold in my tracks from actually producing anything. Guess that's half the fun?
