Post Post subject: GOOD DJS VS. BAD DJS Reply with quote

what isolates a good dj from a bad dj? with something like guitar perhaps its easy to identify the better players, but what about djing?

to get a better perspective on the whole issue, who might be a very talented dj and who may be an overrated or simply awful dj?

thanks, all replies appreciated!

cheers

well in terms of production it's easy to tell who's better
just look at the samples, synths, sequence skills and effects used...

for djing..a good dj makes ravers dance like never before, makes good mix (no conflicts between songs and no mistakes).
for a bad dj..just looking at only 2 or 3 people moving n u'll know

here is what in think
talented djs:
dj jean, ayla,teisto,pvd,Vodoo and Serano....etc.

overrated or simply awful dj:
scooter..thay can hardly be called as dj but well they r just shit at both production and live performance.

There are a couple things that disguish good from bad DJs.

1. Mixing. How well do the songs flow? Are the beats matched, do you notice the transition, is it too obvious, ext.

2. Track selection. What tracks you select affect the vibe of the set as well as its flow. You can't be jumping from Deep Dish to Armin van Buuren to Astral Projection, it sounds disjointed and artificial.

i think Viceroy sums it up nicely here...

also...when it comes to mixing and track selection...a really good dj should also be able to fit in songs not really in his/hers playlist...

When it comes to tune selection, a DJ who is not afreid to drop something a little different, or a really good tune but not sure how it will react is always a good thing. Not really much variety in the same DJ's spinning the same tracks all the time.

hmm well you can't say that they are dj's Rolling Eyes they are just shitty "proudcers" Rolling Eyes

I have a mix cd by Jay Frog before he joined Scooter and I must say that it's pretty good Rolling Eyes and I've once heard a set by Ratty and that was pretty good aswell Rolling Eyes

I would rather put like; Dj Tomcraft as a awful dj.. atleast what I've heard... Rolling Eyes

What makes a good or bad DJ is subjective it depends on your preference. Mixing skill and tune selction is also important as already stated
