Post subject: getting a fixed IP ?!?! |

is there a way of stopping my ip changing everytime i log in ??
its just that i have an ftp set up, (so i can access my computer @ home when at uni.. ) , and everytime i connect to the net i get a diff IP so the address of my ftp changes too often..
is there a way of stopping this ??
im on aol broadband btw..

check if you can buy a fixed ip from aol...
otherwise you need to install a tool from dyndns.org or something to update your domain with the new ip everytime you log on.

uk broadband eh, fat chances are you wont get a fixed ip cheap,
fixed ip = $$$$
some isps might offer a fixed ip, but some dont because chances are in your aup (aceptable user policy) or terms and conditions it'll state they (the isp) prohibt you from running any servers (www/ftp/mail/news/.etc)
from your connection.
and in order to do so, they want you to pay for a
leased line aka business line that'll give you a range of fixed ips and guranteed bandwidth,
sucks, really, but stream is spot on, you'll have to use dyndns.org,
ive set up ftp's in the past using that and it works fine, usually get away with it if your use it sensible (ie not uploading/downloading like 20 gigs a day from your ftp)
